Jami Peace Garden: A new green space blooms in West Toronto

The Jami Mosque at 56 Boustead Avenue buzzed with activity on Saturday, May 24, as neighbours and community members gathered to plant the new Jami Peace Garden. From 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, volunteers dedicated themselves to transforming a portion of the mosque grounds into a vibrant green space, fostering a sense of community and connection to nature.

The call to action for the planting day was widely shared, inviting everyone to participate in "a morning of community, fun, and sadaqah jariyah!" (a continuous charity). The organizers ensured that "plants and gardening tools" were provided, welcoming all, regardless of gardening experience. Light refreshments were also served, adding to the communal atmosphere.

This project is a testament to the power of collective effort, with the Jami Mosque expressing gratitude for the turnout. "This morning, neighbours and community members came together to launch this beautiful project — sharing their love for the environment and beautifying the iconic Jami Mosque in the heart of Toronto," a social media post stated, acknowledging the enthusiastic participation. A special thank you was also extended to the mosque's "dedicated Green Team of volunteers and everyone who came out to support!"

The Jami Peace Garden project is supported by the City of Toronto’s Pollinate TO program. This vital backing underscores a shared commitment to enhancing urban biodiversity and creating more green spaces that benefit both residents and local ecosystems. The garden is specifically designed to feature plants beneficial to pollinators, further contributing to Toronto's ecological health.
